Greece has much to offer a
wide variety of different types of tourists. There are great
destinations for beach lovers, partygoers and of course, lovers of
history alike. With plenty of must-see destinations, one can easily
dedicate a large amount of time to a visit to Greece. Located in
southeastern Europe, Greece has borders with Albania, Bulgaria, Turkey
and Macedonia. The end of the Balkan peninsula, Greece has many, many
islands. The mainland of the country itself is largely mountainous
with a great mass of its landscape over 5000 feet above sea level.
There is simply no other nation in Europe that rivals Greece when it
comes to ancient history. Greece has a wealth of ancient ruins and a
past spanning thousands of years. Civilization has flourished in
Greece since 3000 BC and its history is rich and colorful from the
settlement of Minoan and Mycenaean civilizations millennia ago to the
rising of major city states such as Sparta or Athens almost three
thousand years ago. The period from 1000 BC to 500 BC was the time
when Athens enjoyed its highest point at the pinnacle of civilization.
The classical world began, leaving us with a wealth of history and
knowledge to this day.
This spectacular history strongly survives today and is one of the
main reasons why Greece attracts such a huge number of visitors from
around the world every day of the year. With thousands of ruins
scattered all over the nation, there is a practically unending source
of historical relics. Although the most often visited sites include
the Acropolis, the Theatre of Dionysus, the Parthenon and the National
Archaeological Museum, there is much, much more to be found. Athens is
a great place to start exploring, and it is also the city where the
majority of visitors to Greece will enter into the country. With
plenty of attractions of its own and a huge wealth of great museums
and other forms of entertainment, Athens also serves as a good base
for exploring more of the surrounding country.
Some of Greece’s many islands are also popular destinations for
travelers from around the world. Noted for picturesque nature and
having plenty of attractions of their own, the islands of Rhodes and
Crete are particularly popular. Some of the islands are popular as
major party destinations while others are more ideal for romantics
breaks or peaceful family vacations. The Ionian Islands are also a
very pleasant place to visit..
Back in mainland Greece, the city of Thessaloniki is also worth a
visit. Boasting some 2300 years of history, the city has numerous
monuments dating back from Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman times. The
Thessaloniki archaeological museum is also not to be missed.
A trip around Greece will be a highly rewarding experience for anyone
who enjoys travelling and with so much to see, you can easily spend a
month there exploring the numerous attractions. |
